PIONEER
CERTIFICATES*
Start now on your research so that you can
receive your certificate at our annual presentation in June
2009.
Do you
have roots in Berrien County? If so, be sure you look
into how you can receive one of the certificates listed below.
Level 1:
Trailblazer:
Proof of relationship to anyone living in the County prior to 1805
(before Michigan
was made an official Territory with a "Governor".)
Level 2:
Founder: Proof of relationship
to anyone living in the
County between 1805 to January 25, 1837
(prior to Michigan
becoming a State.)
Level 3:
Settler:
Proof of relationship to anyone living in the County between January 26, 1837
(Michigan's Anniversary) and December 31, 1862 (prior to the 1st
recorded deed in Michigan under the Homestead Act of 1862.)
Level 4:
Homesteader:
Proof of relationship to anyone living in the County between January 1,
1863 and June 30, 1908
(whether they filed land under the
Homestead Act or not) this is Michigan's Homesteader period.
Level 5:
Builder:
Proof of relationship to
anyone living in the County between July 1, 1908 and December
31, 1929 this was the last big immigration into the US before
the activation of the 1924 National Origins Act.
(The Act being
the first permanent immigration quota law, which established a
discriminatory quota system, non-quota status, and a consular
control system; also established was the Border Patrol.)

*Once you submit
your genealogical information and it has been checked by the Berrien County
Genealogical Society for completeness, you will receive a certificate similar to
this at the "Pioneer Certificate Meeting" held each year in June. You can
receive a certificate for each family you submit and one for each level that you
