From “Berrien Bicentennial”, by James T. Carney:
John Stump came to Sodus in 1854 and built a home where Pipestone Creek meets the St. Joseph River.  John built a sawmill there the following year and less than 12 months later, it burned with the replacement mill burning in only 3 years.  John’s bad luck was finally completed when he died of typhoid fever 10 years after he arrived, but his name was commemorated with Stump School, which was put up on the acre of ground he donated for it.  John also donated an acre of ground for what was later known as the Bethel Church, and an acre of ground for a cemetery.”
