Watervliet Cemetery currently has no sign marking it but it is obvious to be a cemetery. The sexton’s Book I was lost containing all burial records prior to June 1882. The sexton of Watervliet is now using the transcription records made by Jean Bachman and David Savage. In 1980, monuments were read by David and Jean and merged with those records were marriages starting with 1831 and birth/death records starting with 1867. Data collected at the Berrien County Clerk’s Office has tried to recreate the original sexton book with the time frame from the 1840s to June 25, 1882 where Book II starts.
The earliest burial recorded in 1980 is that of Clark Eugene Kingsberry, who died November 13, 1818 at the age of 10 months, 9 days. He was the son of Harvey & Julia Ette Kingsberry. Also found was a grave for Mary T. Darris who died on August 11, 1806 at the age of 20, but the records were unable to be verified.
