Harvey Franz was born in Pipestone Township on October 10, 1889 and from early on in his life he was interested in Indian relics and history.  Harvey eventually became a stonecutter and engraver for Ferguson Monument Works in Benton Harbor and provided drawings for the Wilbur Cunningham book, “Land of Four Flags” and in “Letterbook of William Burnett”.  The Michigan Archaelogical Society honored him and he took the nickname of “Pipestone Pete”.  Harvey Franz died on November 10, 1970 at the age of 81 years and is buried in Shanghai Cemetery.
 
James Kirk was the first settler of Pipestone Township, according to “Berrien County Michigan Cemetery Records of All Persons Born Before 1867”, published by the Algonquin Chapter of the DAR in 1930.  James Kirk died on August 31, 1863 at the age of 68 years and is buried in Shanghai Cemetery.
