Penn Yan Cemetery was established when Israel Kellog set aside land for that purpose.  Later, Bushrod Sutherland bought land to enlarge the cemetery; it contains a little over 1 acre.  Some time later the community had a fence built around it, there was a lovely arched gate entrance with “Penn Yan” cut out of metal but it has since deteriorated.
This is the burial ground for the Penn Yan Settlement, which was located in the southwest portion of Bainbridge Township.  The settlement was given its name by Isaac Young after the Brant family located here.  People from New York State and New England first settled the Penn Yan Settlement.  John Robbins is the current president of the Association that owns it.  The first burial was that of John P. Davis in 1837.
