Resurrection Cemetery is beautifully situated overlooking Lake Michigan.  Father Joseph Theisen of the St. Joseph Catholic Church established Resurrection Cemetery in 1882.  The first person to be interred was John Martin on October 24, 1882, who was one of the first trustees of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.  From 1890 to 1899, Reverend Father James Gore led St. Joseph Catholic Church and during that time, John Reider acted as the cemetery caretaker.  Starting in 1929 and through 1986, the caretaker was Albert Bartel.  At the time of this writing, three former Pastors of the church are buried in Resurrection Cemetery: Father Joseph J. Lahey, Monsignor Joseph V. Coyle and Monsignor Patrick J. Kenny.  Church notes mention that 17 years worth of interments were lost when the caretakers’ book was destroyed.

Appearing as “Catholic Cemetery” on the St. Joseph City Plat Map for 1903, Resurrection Cemetery bordered the W. R. Matthews property to the North, the W. S. Dunbar property to the West and Wilkinson’s Subdivision to the East.
